At less than a half mile to the trailhead we had to decide what to do. The decision was made for us. As it turns out a third young man in the group went ahead to the road, where he had cell phone signal and called in an emergency. By the time we were ready to consider whether we could go on we heard a siren approaching. Shortly after, 3 CalFire medics show up with equipment and stretcher and immediately start checking out Bill’s vitals. As soon as they are done 2 more fire crew show up, this time from the Santa Clara County Fire Department. I think there was some responsibility transfer going on. Anyway, the conclusion is that Bill needs to be checked out in the hospital.
To extract bill the medics need a mobile stretcher, which apparently is not standard equipment. So it took a while before it arrives. In the mean time I realize that we have asked Craig to wait for us at the carpool point in Los Gatos. We just wanted to check on him to see if he would be fit to drive home to Gilroy. So, I leave the medics to it and head out. Ben stays with Bill. He takes Bill’s car home, so I don’t have to wait for him., Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve, Los Gatos, California, September 05, 2020, 16:38
